Answer the following questions to ensure that you have set the right goals for yourself:

 

1. Are Your Goals Specific and Realistic?

 
It takes a little research to ensure that a goal is realistic. If you aren’t sure if something is actually achievable then you need to research it further. Once you’ve set a goal that is indeed realistic, you need to be specific about the desired outcome. You want to make it easy to take the goal & work backward to create a schedule of actions needed to succeed.
 

2. Are Your Goals Multifaceted?

 
Focusing on only one part of your life is a bad idea. We live multifaceted lives & need to make goals for all areas of our lives. If you have a successful career but your family life suffers, then no matter how hard you work, you won’t feel complete. Something will always seem missing from your life if your goals aren’t inclusive. You want to make sure your goals include something from each aspect of your life, including your personal passion.

 

3. Is Your Schedule Realistic?

 
After creating your plan to reach each of your goals, you need to consider how representative it is of your reality. Say your goal is to reduce your cholesterol by 10 percent in six months. But you haven’t set aside the time needed to exercise & eat right. Since you didn’t schedule in the time for these objectives, you won’t succeed. It will be very frustrating to practice your new habits or put in place new tasks when time is against you.
 
For instance, if you are going to exercise 30 minutes per day, setting aside only 30 minutes isn’t realistic. You really need to set aside an hour to account for getting ready as well as cooling down or getting cleaned up to go back to work.
 

4. Are You Learning from Past Mistakes?

 
Often when setting goals and schedules, instead of learning from mistakes, we give up. If you notice there are things you’ve forgotten to take into account along the way, don’t give up! Learn from the situation & change your plan to be more realistic.
 
You might find that at some point you have to rewrite all your goals & your schedule in order to account for real life. (Like missing a week of work because your daughter has the flu). Many people believe this is something negative, but the truth is, top performers revaluate & adjust their goals on a regular basis.

5. Do Your Goals Represent You?

 
Many moms set goals that represent what someone else wants instead of what they want. This can cause a lot of bad feelings & resentment which can derail even the best-laid plans. As you set goals for your life, ask yourself if they’re what you want for yourself or what someone else wants for you. Make some goals for yourself that don’t involve anyone else’s needs or wants.
 
It’s okay to do things because of someone else, but it’s important that you are honest about that to yourself. Just be cautious before you embark on someone else’s journey.

6. Are You Scheduled to Stay on Track?

 
Schedules are very important to the success of reaching any goal in life. Mental to do lists pale in comparison to a well laid out calendar. As a mom, you need to set a schedule to get you from point A to point B. Ensure that you look at your schedule daily & note when you succeed in sticking to your schedule & when you don’t. Noticing a pattern of activity can be helpful in fixing a poorly written schedule. It will also help you stay realistic about whether or not you’re sticking to your plan.
 

7. Are Your Goals Motivating?

 
When writing a goal it’s important to write them in a positive way, or at least a way that feels positive to you. During your goal planning, try writing down a goal & then changing the words to sound more motivating. For instance, losing 10 pounds seems like a good goal, but for some, it might signify deprivation. Instead, you might frame the goal as improving my BMI by 10 points or improving my cholesterol by 10 percent.
 

8. Do You Have Too Many Goals?

 
Just as setting too few goals can be a problem, so can setting too many. If you have set multiple goals in each area of your life, you might tire yourself out & get overwhelmed. Instead, pick one or two goals from each area to focus on until you reach them, & then you can add more goals as time goes on. I prefer planning for the quarter, which I recently learned about which allows me to rearrange priorities every 90 days. You don’t need to do everything today. Slow and steady wins the race!
